FAQ

What is horary astrology?

John Frawley defines horary as the art of answering a specific question by judging the chart cast for the moment in which that question is asked. In brief, the moment itself is the chart.

Academy: What Is Horary?
Is it fortune-telling or prophecy?

Neither. It reads the astronomical data of the moment (NASA/JPL) with traditional rules; it shows you a tendency and an indication, not a fixed fate.

How do I ask?

Ask one clear, sincere question. Concrete questions such as “yes or no?” or “where?” give the clearest answer.

Are the answers certain?

The sky shows a direction and a tendency. A clear indication comes through, but the decision is yours.

Is it paid?

Your first question each day is a gift; a short ad gives you 3 more. If you want to go deeper, you can continue as much as you like with question credits.

What happens to my account and privacy?

You can browse 33HORARY without an account; to ask a question, buy credits or open lessons you need to sign in. The chart is calculated on your device; the question you ask stays yours.

Do I need to know astrology?

No. The reading comes in plain language; all you need to do is ask your question. If you are curious, the Academy in the app teaches it step by step.

How is the reading prepared?

We map the sky of the moment you ask using NASA/JPL astronomical data and read it with traditional rules handed down for centuries.

Which languages is it in?

Turkish and English — and we keep growing.

Can I get my horary chart for free?

Yes. Open a live chart with NASA/JPL on the Live Horary Chart page and learn its details.

Is learning horary free?

Yes. In the Horary Academy you can read the lessons and listen to them for free. Learning horary with 33 Horary is now very easy.

How do I read a horary chart?

The coming together of the significators is called perfection. It is the meeting in the chart of the two significators representing the querent (the person asking) and the quesited (the thing asked about).

When the two significators can meet, the event is brought about and the tendency is toward 'yes'; when there is no route by which they can meet, the event does not come forward. Perfection is therefore the heart of the answer.

Can I ask the same question again?

In the tradition, the same question is not asked again unless circumstances have truly changed, because the first sincere asking gives the chart of that moment. If the situation has clearly changed, it becomes a new question.

Can horary help find a lost item?

The 2nd house signifies your money, income, savings, and movable possessions such as a car, telephone, or jewelry. When one of your possessions is lost, the object is signified by the planet ruling the 2nd house, that is, by its significator.

Questions about buying a home or land, the father, and property belong here. According to Houlding, in lost-property questions the 4th house, because it is a corner (angular) house, describes the ground or place where the item lies. The item is often found near the home or in its customary place.

Can I ask about my lost pet?

Yes. A lost pet is also represented by a significator in horary; the chart’s direction and indications show a tendency about where to look.

Can I ask a question like “When will I get married?”

You can, but keep it single and concrete, such as “Will this relationship lead to marriage this year?” Very broad “when” questions do not give a clear indication. Tradition converts the number of degrees between the significators into a unit of time; whether that unit is days, weeks, months or years depends on the type of sign and the house the significator is in.

Which house system do you use?

The engine works with the Regiomontanus house system standardized by Lilly in 1647 and with the seven classical planets.

In 1647, with Christian Astrology, he wrote the most important English-language classic of horary and established the Regiomontanus house system as the standard. This is the tradition followed by 33HORARY.

Is the chart radical? What if the Ascendant is very early or very late?

If the Ascendant is in the first three degrees of a sign (0°, 1° or 2°), the matter may not yet be mature and the question has been asked too early. Lilly allows one exception: if the querent is very young and their appearance agrees with the rising sign, the chart may still be judged. Usually, rather than forcing an answer, it is better to wait a while.

If the Ascendant is in the final degrees of a sign (27-29°), Lilly says it is 'no ways safe to give judgment': the matter may already have advanced too far, or the querent may be too late. Exception: the chart may still be judged when the querent's age corresponds with the rising degree, or when the chart is set for a definite moment of an event.

What does a retrograde planet mean in horary?

A retrograde significator is weakened: a reluctant, hesitant party that draws back. Rather than moving forward, it goes backward from where it stands.

An important fact: the Moon is never retrograde. The Moon can only move faster or slower; it is never described as retrograde.

Academy: Retrograde Motion
What is a void of course Moon?

The Moon is void of course when it will make no further exact major aspect before leaving its current sign. The Moon describes the flow of events, that is, the direction in which the matter is moving.

When the principal significators are very strong (in their own dignities, with clear aspects), the matter may still proceed despite a void Moon. A void of course Moon is therefore not by itself an absolute denial.

Do I need my birth date or birth time?

Horary differs from natal astrology: a birth date and birth time are not required. All that is needed is a sincere question and the moment at which it is asked.

Academy: What Is Horary?
What kinds of questions can I ask?

Questions may concern major life matters, but they may also be entirely ordinary. Frawley gives both major questions such as “Will I get this job?” and everyday questions such as “Where are my keys?”; “Will my lost cat come home?” also falls within the scope of horary.

Horary answers specific, concrete questions. A clearly worded question that can be answered with “yes” or “no” is generally best.

Academy: What Is Horary?
Where does the method come from?

Horary was not a single invention. It developed from Babylonian and Hellenistic roots and matured as it was handed on through the Arabic-Persian masters, Bonatti, and Lilly.

Academy: Who Created This Art?
When will it happen? How is timing shown?

An angular house tends toward a near and rapid result, a cadent house toward a distant and slow one. If the significator is both angular and fast, the matter tends to move plainly and swiftly.
