What Is Horary?

A lost ring, a piece of news you are waiting for, a difficult decision… What happens when you put a question to the heavens?

The chart of the moment

John Frawley defines horary as the art of answering a specific question by judging the chart cast for the moment in which that question is asked. In brief, the moment itself is the chart.

How it differs from a natal chart

Horary differs from natal astrology: a birth date and birth time are not required. All that is needed is a sincere question and the moment at which it is asked.

Everyday, concrete examples

Questions may concern major life matters, but they may also be entirely ordinary. Frawley gives both major questions such as “Will I get this job?” and everyday questions such as “Where are my keys?”; “Will my lost cat come home?” also falls within the scope of horary.

What horary does not examine

Horary deals with real, tangible matters, not abstract or speculative subjects. General-knowledge or mathematical questions such as “How old is the universe?” do not belong to its field.

Sample question: Will I find the ring I lost yesterday?
