SECTION 5

Planetary Strength (Essential Dignity)

Essential dignity shows how much a planet belongs in, and is comfortable within, the sign it occupies — that is, how strong it is. In horary it allows you to concretely read the real strength of a significator, and therefore of the person or thing it represents. In this module you will meet the five positions of strength — domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term, and face — and two debilities, detriment and fall.

TOPICS

  1. 1Domicile (a planet in its own sign)A significator in a sign it rules is like a king in his own fortress: decisive, capable, and not to be moved from its place.
  2. 2Exaltation (a position of honor)when the significator is in its exaltation, the person is honored and well regarded; but the brilliance does not come from ground of their own, so it can be showy and fragile.
  3. 3Triplicity (Support from the Element)a significator in its own triplicity is like a guest warmly welcomed in a relative's house: not in luxury, but supported and able to manage.
  4. 4Term and Face (Minor Supports)term and face are the smallest of the five essential dignities: in its own term a significator keeps a foothold even on ground that is not its own, while in its own face it is someone barely preserving its standing, almost empty-handed.
  5. 5Detriment and Fall (Weaknesses)detriment and fall are the two principal essential debilities that break a significator's strength: in detriment the person or thing is very weak and out of place; in fall the case is somewhat lighter — the significator has fallen, but it can still recover.
