Applying and Separating — Will It Happen, or Has It Happened?
The same aspect says something entirely different depending on its direction: are the planets moving toward one another, or away from one another? Houlding regards this distinction as the heart of horary; the answer to "will it happen, or has it happened?" lies here.
An applying aspect = the future
In an applying aspect the faster planet moves toward the completion of the aspect. Since classical times an applying aspect has shown the future and events yet to occur; the perfection of the aspect means the occurrence of the thing asked about. In horary, judgment rests on applying aspects.
A separating aspect = the past
In a separating aspect exactness has already occurred and the planets are moving apart. Since classical times a separating aspect has shown the past and events already completed (in the language of the older texts, early life and the elderly). If a matter falls on a separating aspect, it has already happened, or the opportunity has passed.
The planet that casts the aspect
In any aspect the faster planet casts the aspect and the slower planet receives it. According to Skyscript, it is the casting planet that brings the event about, while the condition of the receiving planet colors how that event is expressed.
Sample question: Will I recover my lost telephone? (If the significator representing you, or the Moon, makes an applying aspect to the significator of the thing asked about, then yes; if the aspect is separating, the matter belongs to the past.)
