What Is a Significator?

The first step in reading a question is identifying the principal actors on the stage. In horary these are called significators.

What is a significator?

A significator is a planet that represents a person or thing in the chart. The essential distinction is that the significator is not the house itself, but the planet ruling that house.

Two significators first

When reading a question, you first identify two significators: the planet representing you, the querent, and the planet representing the other party or the matter, the quesited. You then read the answer through the relationship between these two planets.

The natural significator

Alongside the house-ruler significator, the matter's natural significator is also read: Venus for love, or the Sun for a father or authority. The two are assessed together.

A short example

In a love question, the other person falls in the 7th house; the planet ruling that house becomes the significator of the person you are asking about. So: first the house, then the ruler of that house.

Sample question: In this question, which planet represents me?
